How to Test Your Auto Battery with Battery Tester

Testing a car battery is one of the most important things that an owner or a user should do at regular intervals. As you know, the battery of a car is one of the most important parts of the car and without it ignition is impossible and other parts like sensors and motors might not work. Rather than waiting for the battery to malfunction, it would be best to check the battery regularly.

A car battery tester could be used in different ways based on their design. This is true and the accuracy of the tester depends on how you use it. Here is how to test your car battery using a car battery tester.

Auto Battery with Battery Tester

There are commonly 4 different ways to check a car battery.

  1. Load test
  2. Using a multimeter
  3. Load tester
  4. Electrolyte gravity test

Among these testing methods, only two methods employ a car battery tester.

  1. Using a multimeter
  2. Load tester

Here is how to use a multimeter to test a car battery –

One of the best and easy way to test a car battery is to use a multimeter, this device helps the user to test your battery and find out the battery capacity with ease.

Step 1: The user will have to set the multimeter to 20 DC volts

Step 2: Pick the negative probe of the multimeter and touch the negative terminal of the car battery and positive probe on the positive terminal of the battery.

Step 3: Now, ask someone to turn on the headlight of the car or switch on any other electrical accessory. The headlight would be the best.

Step 4: Check the multimeter reading, you would find the reading.

If the multimeter shows a 12.5 V reading, then it means your car battery is at full capacity. If the reading is 12.4 V, then the car battery is 75% charged. On the other hand, if the reading is less than 11.5 V, then your car battery is only 25% charged.

If the reading is too low, slow charge your battery and then test again. If the reading is still low, then it means, your battery is inefficient and you need to replace the battery.

Here is how to use a load tester –

Load tester is one of the most efficient car battery testers available on the market today. Unlike a multimeter, a load tester comes designed in such a way that it could display the voltage reading and CCA reading.

A load tester is a device that most professionals use to measure the efficiency of the battery. Like a multimeter voltmeter, a load tester should be connected in the same way. However, the user does not have to turn on the headlight. The load tester itself would apply load and display the readings. In case, the volt displayed by the tester is less than 9.6 V, it means the battery is overused and inefficient. Anything above this reading would be good.
